SHEEP WOOL PRODUCTS
Wool products, an upward trend!
Wool, until the discovery of chemically synthesized fibers and their massive use, was a very common and precious material in our home. We offer different products with the firm desire to restore the value of this material and aware that the search for natural, local and unique products is an upward trend. Consumers are realizing the benefits that natural fibers like wool can provide.
- For health reasons. Being natural substances, they adapt easily to the skin and cause, in general, fewer allergy problems.
- For environmental reasons. The use of plant and animal fibers provides natural and renewable resources, avoiding the impact of synthetic materials that mainly use substances derived from petroleum. In addition, they degrade more easily than synthetics, making them more environmentally sustainable.
- For responsible consumption. Natural fibers represent a source of income for livestock farmers, much needed to offset the cost of shearing.

How do you get wool from sheep?
Wool is a natural fiber obtained from sheep through a process called carding. Professional clippers cut very close to the skin with mechanical clippers. The sheep do not suffer, on the contrary, they appreciate the release of weight and coat for a cooler summer.
Our sheep are shorn once a year, in the spring (usually May or June). In ancient times, the day of the shearing was a big party with a good meal. At Mas Casas we offer you the possibility to visit us on the day of the shearing. We want you to see how the shearers work and what we do with the wool afterwards.
The characteristics of wool vary according to the breed of sheep, the part of the animal it comes from and its age, but what characteristics does wool have compared to other materials?
- Wool is reusable and biodegradable. Wool is a more expensive natural fiber than synthetic fabrics, but it tends to last longer and get better results. In addition, it is very easy to recycle and eventually degrades naturally without leaving any polluting by-products.
- Much less energy is needed to process wool than to produce synthetic fibres, which come from fossil fuels.
- Wool is made up of the same protein as the outer protective layer of the skin and works in total harmony with the body's own protective mechanisms.
- Wool has a high hygroscopic capacity, that is to say, it absorbs ambient humidity when it is high and releases humidity when the environment is dry. This feature allows it to take moisture from perspiration and release it into the environment away from the body. In addition, this physical process releases or consumes heat, so on a cold, wet day, wool absorbs moisture releasing heat to the body and on a dry, warm day, it releases moisture and absorbs heat from the body giving a feeling of freshness This is one of the reasons for its extraordinary comfort.
- Wool has a high resistance to fire. Wool burns, but at very high temperatures, it burns slowly and is self-extinguishing. Does not melt and does not stick to the skin in case of fire.
- Wool is a great thermal and electrical insulator - it does not store static electricity.
- The waxed surface of the fiber delays the absorption of liquids and therefore stains. The wool contains anti-microbial properties that prevent bad odors and has a self-cleaning function where the odors of the environment are repelled immediately and only by ventilating it in the open air, the garment recovers its neutral smell.
- The structure of the wool, in scales, allows it, under certain conditions of humidity, heat and friction, to form strong bonds between fibers that create a dense frame (felt) without the need to spin or weave the fibers.
And after buying a wool product, what?
Wool has some resistance to bacteria and fungi, but these microorganisms can attack it if the wool is stored in a humid and dusty atmosphere. Below we give you some tips for its correct maintenance.
- Cleaning must be done by hand, with cold water, or in the washing machine, with a wool program, without spinning. Do not use detergents or chemicals. The most natural way to do this is with a splash of vinegar. Keeping the water temperature the same during the wash is just as important as keeping it short. Once clean, you can dry it lying horizontally so that it doesn't take bad shapes, but never with the dryer.
- Wool is a natural fiber and is therefore conducive to the breeding of moths which can damage it very quickly. We advise you to be careful and apply a preventive treatment. For example, putting a few drops of cedarwood essential oil, cedarwood balls or a sprig of dried sage or lavender inside your cupboards and drawers.
